The Toledo-Lucas County Public Library

The Toledo Lucas County Public Library (TLCPL) was founded in 1838 and was Ohio’s first public library created with tax dollars. In 1916, the Andrew Carnegie Fund offered $125,000 to build five branch locations on sites to be provided by the City of Toledo. In the 1970s, Toledo Library merged with the Lucas County Library and the Sylvania Library to form today’s Toledo Lucas County Public Library. TLCPL currently has 20 building locations (Main Library, built in 1940, and 19 branch locations), and also operates four mobile services vehicles: a bookhauler, bookmobile, Ready to Read van, and a Mobile Technology Center. The Library’s website is affectionately referred to as the system’s 21st library location, as it is operational to the public 24/7. TLCPL serves all of Lucas County and has one of the largest collections in Ohio. The Library is funded with a combination of state dollars via the Public Library Fund, and ballot measure levies which are placed to the voters of the county about every five years.
